How to choose SUP (stand up paddleboard)
Inflatable and hard SUP
Inflatable SUP is easier to store and transport – it is compact, takes up little space, fits in a comfortable backpack and is lighter. Inflatable SUP is more impact resistant, suitable for fast rivers and rapids
Hard board takes up more space, is heavier, can be transported on the roof of a car
the ride, speed and maneuverability of the hardboard is better, it is meant for a more sporty style
if you live on the shore of a body of water, a hard board will be better
Factors of an inflatable SUP board
How hard can you inflate a SUP board? For comparison, car tires have a pressure of 29 psi/ 2 bar
quality SUP boards – starting at 15 psi/ 1.03 bar
At this pressure, the boards become rigid, do not twist. When the rider is standing, the ends of the board do not rise above the water. The ride characteristics become similar to the ride of hard boards.
Premium boards – 20 psi/ 1.38 bar
Extra class boards – 27 psi/ 1.86 bar
heavier riders need larger boards
when choosing a board for family needs, you should be guided by the heaviest rider
SUP board parameters: length, width, volume
Leisure, wave and hiking models
The simplest recreational boards have a round front. They are intended for use in various conditions, both for riding on waves and on smooth water. This is the most popular type of board suitable for beginners. Boards are longer, wider, stable and easy to ride on smooth water, as well as maneuverable boards with a sharper tip are easier to keep in a straight line, gain more speed and cover longer distances with less effort. They are slightly longer ( 11-12″) competition boards are narrow, long, with a pointed toe, intended for long distances, high speed. Not suitable for beginners.
